The 2009-10 Common Application and Common App system won't be released until July 1. However, you can get an advance look at some of the changes here. Yellow highlighting indicates changes to the paper (and online) application, and pink highlighting indicates new "dropdown menu" choices will be available online.
 
07/01/2008 The Common App Online 2008-09 Launches
On Tuesday, July 1st, 2008, the Common App Online for First-Year applicants re-launched with lots of new features for the 2008-09 admission cycle. You can see a few of them highlighted here. The transfer application will be available later in July. The new system also features an online School Forms System which can be reviewed here.

The Common Application is pleased to announce the election of Doris Davis, Associate Provost for Admission & Enrollment at Cornell University, as President-Elect of the Board of Directors. In addition, we're pleased to announce the election of new Board members Nancy Monnich Benedict, Vice President for Enrollment at Beloit College; Martha Merrill, Dean of Admission & Financial Aid at Connecticut College; and Homer Turner, Guidance Counselor at Newton South High School (Massachusetts).

06/12/2008 2008-09 Common App Preview
We're pleased to offer a preview of the 2008-09 Common Application for First-Year Admission. The changes are highlighted in yellow. In particular, we'd like to highlight the following:

- A "Future Plans" box includes questions that may have different answers for different colleges.
- The Legal Guardian information is now collected separately from Parent 1 and Parent 2.
- AP/IB self-reported information is now collected alongside other standardized tests.
- The Honors information collected is now much more detailed.
- The Extracurricular activity description space has nearly tripled.
- The Extracurricular and Work Experience is now collected separately as "school year" or "summer."
- The 150-word short answer will now appear on four lines directly on the application itself.
- IB Diploma information is collected on the Secondary School Report.

The Common App Online 2008-09 will launch on Tuesday, July 1st. Print applications will be distributed in late July or early August, but they may be pre-ordered beginning July 1.
 
01/09/2008 Record Application Numbers Announced
The 72-hour period from December 30th through Jan 1st is always the high-water mark for online submissions. In this, the tenth year of the Common App Online, but the first year of our new online system, we set another new volume record. We are pleased to report that we processes over 75,000 applications and over 65,000 supplements on December 31st alone -- an enormous increase over last year. That said, students submitted slightly under 4 applications on average, a number which is almost unchanged from last year. In other words, students are not applying to more colleges, but more students are using the Common App Online. Our submission statistics are as follows through January 1:

  • 38% - overall increase comparing Dec 31, 2006 to Dec 31, 2007

  • 623,465 submitted since Jul 1

  • 52% - overall increase comparing Dec 31, 2006 to Dec 31, 2007
School Forms
  • 66,127 submitted since Jul 1
  • 3,729 submitted Dec 30-Jan 1
  • 5,000 were submitted OVERALL last year, so the increase is enormous
